OMG - I might be able to answer something. I think (ergo sum Lil) that the square boxing ring is called a ring because the original outdoor bouts were ringed by the spectators - a bit like that Clint Eastwood film where he was a bare knuckle fighter.

But then why is a touch down called a touch down when you don't actually have to touch the ball down? Shit - insomnia calls!

And why are hot dog buns never sliced down the middle but off to one side.....
Why do people open a card, read it and then look at the back... what do they expect to see there.....
Same people pick up a figurine, look at it and exclaim how lovely it is and then they turn it over and look at the bottom... why?
