Now Boys and Girls.Todays lesson is.....

Take the first three digits of your telephone number.Got it? Good.Next,multiply it by 80.Add 1.Now multiply your answer by 250.Next add the last four digits of your telephone number to your answer.Add the last four digits one more time.Got it so far? Now substract 250 and divide by 2............... ............................................ .................................................. ...................................... ............................................ Is the answer you got,your telephone number?

OK... here goes...

x=the first three digits
y=the last four digits

Quote:
Take the first three digits of your telephone number
x
Quote:
Next,multiply it by 80
80x
Quote:
Add 1
80x+1
Quote:
Now multiply your answer by 250
250(80x+1) = 20,000x+250
Quote:
Next add the last four digits of your telephone number to your answer.
20,000x+250+y
Quote:
Add the last four digits one more time.
20,000x+250+y+y = 20,000x+250+2y
Quote:
Now substract 250
20,000x+250+2y-250 = 20,000x+2y
Quote:
and divide by 2
(20,0000x +2y)/2 = 10,000x+y

hence, (any 3 digit number * 10,000) + (any four digit number) = the original X and Y in order (forming the telephone number)

NO! You are not dumb.European telephone #'s are different.Here we have a 3 digit prefix and 4 digit number.That is why the trick works.
