My kitty cat

My kitty Simba got hit by a car yesterday sometime

He couldnt breath properly nor walk

The vet kept him overnight (weren't sure he'd make it through...but he did)....i got him home today....he still cant walk properly(and wont unless he absolutely has to)...he sorta staggers (he has a fractured pelvis apparently) and his breathing is still laboured (maybe a tear in his diaphram)

The vet let me take him home as he was stressing in the unfamiliar surroundings....He refuses to eat or drink still....but has peed (*L* means his bladder nerves weren't damaged at least..)

He is at present asleep with his Mum lying beside him licking his fur. He is in pain obviously...but thats what happens when ya take on a car

Every now and then he rattles up a purr....so i'm very hopeful that with some TLC he'll make it.

Anyway time will tell wether he recovers to what he was

OziJuggalo 12-24-2004 05:14 AM

hope he gets better soon nothing werse then a hurt pet well hurt child but all the worry not good at this time of year

on a lighter side if you got the spare cash could always get him cloned

fzzy 12-24-2004 07:15 AM

Awwwww hoping your kitty is better soon and that he learned his lesson that he can't play with cars.

fred 12-24-2004 08:43 AM

all the best

mayhem1978 12-24-2004 08:53 AM

awww as a cat owner i can truly say that they bounce back from a hell of a lot just give plenty of tlc and put food and drink nearby so that he dont have to move too far.

Ill be praying for him

Lilith 12-24-2004 10:20 AM

(Simba) and ((Sharni)) If anyone can nurse him back to good health I am sure you can.

cowgirltease 12-24-2004 11:21 AM

Cheyanne 12-24-2004 11:44 AM

((((Sharni)))) Damn cars anyway...

Sounds like with some TLC Simba should be ok...cats are amazing resilient...

Sharni 12-24-2004 04:10 PM

Thanx all *hugz*

As for wether he learnt his lesson....it wont matter, him and his Mum will not get the chance to do it again......i'm currently converting my bird avairy into a cat house....that will be their home for the rest of their lives

Oldfart 12-24-2004 04:21 PM

Keep it stocked with mynahs and starlings and the other pest species and you're

doing the world 2 favours, and the cats one as well.

texascubfan 12-24-2004 10:38 PM

Me and Sulley and Leiber are all hoping for the best for your kitty. Sulley is even using his special kitty telepathy to channel good energy to him!

OzKristin 12-24-2004 11:36 PM

Having worked as a vet assistant and tech, I've unfortunately seen many of these situations...I really hope your kitty recovers quickly, I'm very very sorry to hear this happened :(

Sharni 12-25-2004 01:04 AM

Update:

He's breathing a bit easier today....still refusing to eat or drink which has me quite worried as it been since Thursday and today is Saturday

I've tried to gently force him to at least drink but it upsets him, which in turn upsets his breathing..so i just let him be

How long can a cat go without water?

maddy 12-25-2004 01:30 AM

Sharni, I hope all the best for your cat. I couldn't imagine being in your shoes, I'd be quite panicked.

sodaklostsoul 12-25-2004 03:34 AM

Sending our good vibes to you and kitty, glad he's breathing a bit better. Wish I knew what to tell ya. *huggs*

dicksbro 12-25-2004 03:46 AM

You've got our hopes and prayers, Sharni. Please keep us posted and take a hug from your Pixie family.

darogle 12-25-2004 09:02 PM

He seems the same to me.....he just lays there...sorta on his belly with his back legs out beside him...must be the comfiest spot for him......i made him a nice soft bed but he prefers the floor....might be a bit more supportive of his pelvis i spose

Here's some pics of him in his happier days

3 days is long enough. Let me tell you how you can tell if he is dehydrated or not.
Pull up on the skin between his shoulderblades and then let it go. If it takes more than 3 seconds to snap back he is dehydrated. If he is, your vet can give him subcutaneous fluids(IV fluids) to keep him rehydrated for a couple of days. You also need to check his gums periodically. They should be pink. If you press on his gums and let go.... see how long it takes for the color to come back. Again if it takes longer than 3 seconds he could still be in shock or he's losing blood somewhere inside.
Good luck girlfriend. Btw........ Is he breathing with his mouth open or closed?

Sharni 12-25-2004 11:18 PM

His mouth is open....though nowhere near as far as it was...his tongue is no longer out as well....he looked like a dog does when it pants

cowgirltease 12-25-2004 11:28 PM

Yeah sounds like he has a diaphragmatic hernia. What color is his tongue?

Sharni 12-25-2004 11:35 PM

Pink as far as i know

cowgirltease 12-25-2004 11:41 PM

Well thats good. That means he's getting plenty of oxygen still. If it gets bluish get him back in. Here's a little info for you.

cowgirltease 12-25-2004 11:45 PM

You'll probably understand this one better.

((((Sharni and Simba)))) ~ sending healing thoughts

Sharni 12-26-2004 01:07 AM

Thanx CGT....they were both very interesting

I just checked him and he appears to be breathing much better...not normal by any means but better

His meow is rather pitiful but he's trying.....he purrs a bit louder

The vet did say he thought he had a tear in his diapham...but that he thought it to be small enough to heal itself....so hopefully...going by how he's breathing that will happen

cowgirltease 12-26-2004 01:26 AM

Yes lets hope it's a tiny hole and seals itself off. The main thing now is just don't stress him out. He will eat when he gets hungry.I'm sure he just hurts so bad right now he doesn't feel like it but he does need some fluids.
Hang in there. :) :thumb:

Sharni 12-26-2004 01:47 AM

Yes him not eating doesnt worry me....i know how i feel when i feel like shit *LOL*

Water i know he needs....its been in the 30s every day so far...but if i try to get some into him it stresses him....so i'm just gonna have to watch and wait i think

Sharni 12-26-2004 06:44 PM

Simba doesnt look too good today :(

He refuses to eat and drink still......i managed to get about 1/2 a teaspoon in to him but he gagged on every drop

He's got pus coming out of his paws where he must have damaged some claws....his eyes are all yucky in the corners

His meow has all but dissappeared...i can feel every bone in his body....he has absolutely no energy

I rang the vet who said to bring him back in and he'll check him out....fingers crossed we can get him through this

Lilith 12-26-2004 06:50 PM

((((((((Sharni))))))))

Doesn't sound good hun...I hope IV fluids and some antibiotics will help him fight off the infections.

Sharni 12-27-2004 02:27 AM

At 5:15pm he took his last breath

Both lungs had collapsed and he wouldnt have survived surgery.....so the decision i took was to end his suffering

RIP baby (((Simba)))

PantyFanatic 12-27-2004 02:52 AM

Ya did good by him :(

dicksbro 12-27-2004 05:11 AM

The love you felt for him and his for you no doubt will survive. Our hearts go out to you as I know what it is like to lose a pet that has meant a lot to you. Your Simba and our Pokey are probably frolicing together. We'll hope so, anyway. ;)

texascubfan 12-27-2004 07:45 AM

Our deepest sympathy for Simba and for you, Sharni. You did everything you could to make his life better and toward the end did everything you could to make sure he knew he was loved and cared for. I know this is and will be a tough time for you. Please accept a family hug from Lieber, Sulley and me (((Sharni)))
when i lost my best kitty, the one that went through a divorce and everything else with me, i found that the only thing that helped me feel better was looking at pictures of when we were happy and together. please feel better soon, although i know it takes a little while.

Lilith 12-27-2004 07:50 AM

The hardest thing for you but the best thing for him (((((((((Sharni)))))))))) so sorry for your family's loss.

maddy 12-27-2004 09:02 AM

((((sharni))))

cherrypie7788 12-27-2004 09:59 AM

I'm really sorry, Sharni :( I know it hurts to lose a pet, but you did the right thing.
