My balcony has become pigeon party central!

And MAN, do they like to be party poopers!

Anyone have any good tips for getting rid of them? I don't want an owl on my balcony and I don't want to watch them explode from Alka Seltzer. :)

:bfly:

Lilith 05-26-2004 10:58 AM

Throw seed on the balcony next door :p

dreamgurl 05-26-2004 10:58 AM

have you tried those blow up party lantern thingies, they have streamers on them, the movement scares them, supposedly. other than that i'm no help. good luck and i would invest in some good cleaner that stuff is hard to get rid of.

Lilith 05-26-2004 11:03 AM

maybe lots of windchime would have the same effect.

Steph 05-26-2004 11:34 AM

LOL Lil! The guys next door are stoners aka possible friends. :D

Don't tell me that stuff is hard to clean! I woke up this morning to several white blobs on the patio. I'm shopping for patio furniture soon and I don't want to get white stuff just to blend in!

I've heard ammonia works so I'll give it a go. It'll kill two birds with one stone, pardon the pun - it'll clean the poop and keep them away.

Eros 05-26-2004 11:56 AM

Hmmm...I have an air rifle and some time on my hands....Squab anyone???

LMAO

The windchimes or those cool crystal gazing things seem like the ticket to me. The gazing thing has beads, mirrors, and crystals hanging around, sorta like a windchime but cooler looking. Could be something fun to stare at during certain "sitting outside" times. ;)

wyndhy 05-26-2004 12:26 PM

i saw a show on HGTV (gardening by the yard, i think it was) and the host said to hang CDs up on a wire. don't remember if it was for all birds or certain birds. worth a try, maybe...good luck.

WildIrish 05-26-2004 12:29 PM

Put your horse to work chasing the damn pests away! It's about time he started earning his keep.

thedog 05-26-2004 12:48 PM

Maybe instead of hanging the CDs, you could play them. Just put "The Osmonds" on continuous play. That should keep them away.

Lilith 05-26-2004 12:50 PM

Would work for me :p

Think that for this to work it HAS to be William Hung's CD of "She Bang". That will scare ANYTHING and EVERYTHING off your balcony.

Oldfart 05-26-2004 01:23 PM

Something is bringing the birds.

Do you have birds which toss seed attracting the little sh- sorry birds

or perhaps some plant gone to seed that they like?

Birdseed soaked in alum would not be toxic to them, but be bitter enough

to send them elsewhere (I think).

Failing that, rat traps baited with peeled pumpkin seeds are slightly

more legal than a 12ga shotgun.

lakritze 05-26-2004 02:18 PM

Get out your pidgeon-english dictionary. They might want to communicate something to you.

Eros---I was going to suggest that but I thought that everyone
would freak out!I used to shoot handguns competitively.I now, keep a 22 pistol,by the back door.Voila,NO more squirrels,at my wifes,bird feeders.May I also,suggest a Crossman BB/Pellet gun.
The power can increase,up to 10 pumps(No CO2 Cartridge)
They are silent, have a rifeled barrel & are very accurate.=no
pissed-off neighbors.I can't use a trap,because of my wifes cat!
Steph---We had ground squirrels/chipmunks digging around my
newly paved driveway. My wife checked the web. They suggested
5 gal buckets,1/2-3/4 filled with water, then you float sunflower
seeds on top of the water. You run a wooden ramp(board)up &
slightly overhanging,the buckets side.They walk up,the ramp,try
to eat the seed, fall in & drown. It sounds stupid but it works.
Suggestion:Wear earplugs,so the screaming won't bother you!:D
P.S.Try the web or a search! Irish

Steph 05-26-2004 02:23 PM

Were you guys supposed to be scaring me more than the birds? :D

We're hanging out there today and perhaps our smell is keeping them away.

LOL WI - the horse is on full-time big bug duty. He's almost earning his keep that way. How much rent do I deduct for a Lab with gas, though?

There was no "pigeon away" at the hardware store. Hanging out there on days off is helping. They like boobs, though! :dizzy:

Steph 05-26-2004 02:25 PM

For the gun guys, it'd be like shooting fish in a barrell. It'd be easier to punch them and if I were to hunt, I'd like to give them a running start.

*wait*

The flapping of their wings is making me postal.

WildIrish 05-26-2004 02:27 PM

When I was a pigeon...

I loved boobs! :D

Steph 05-26-2004 02:36 PM

Birds like boobs! I'm doomed!

How do you spell barrell?

GAH!

PantyFanatic 05-26-2004 03:01 PM

Take advantage of your good fortune Steph. Capitalize on the fact that they are coming to you, like Eros said. I’m sure you know a restaurant operator in China town that will be glad to trade you some bushes for “pheasant-under-glass”. Stop on the way to work and pick up a couple boxes of popcorn and a pack No. 4 fish hooks. Then run over to Clutzy Rents and have them hook up model “Pyramid-Klean” combination, diesel compressor and sandblaster to your bumper. Tow that home and you’ll have your problem solved and the place clean in no time. :)

Remember "If the guys don't find you attractive, they should at least find you handy.", ;)

flutelady 05-26-2004 03:14 PM

That's what I was thinking... if you're a carnivore, you've got it made!

Wondering if rockintime actually bought the William Hung CD *shudder*

Steph 05-26-2004 03:21 PM

Way to paraphrase! Your leader would weep, PF!

My horse and I are growing tired. We can't keep watch much longer. We now realize the birds are stupid enough to fear pillows so we will set up Pringle discards and old pillowcases.

WildIrish 05-26-2004 03:27 PM

Fill your patio with empty Pringle containers? Are you mad, woman? You might as well hang up a "I smoke weed" banner from that patio!

Steph 05-26-2004 03:28 PM

But I'm low on pot and I think this will scare the pigeons and entice my pothead neighbours! Foolproof?

WildIrish 05-26-2004 03:29 PM

So when your neighbors sneak onto your balcony to investigate the pringles cans...you toss a pillowcase over their heads and riffle through their pockets in search of stash!

PF's wrong...you're brilliant!

Steph 05-26-2004 03:34 PM

Yes, that's what I was hoping for - WI & PF to combine forces!

WildIrish 05-26-2004 03:39 PM

Hey! I was being serious! That's a hell of an idea for a trap, Steph! You'd never have to buy weed again! And don't forget...weed destroys short term memory so they'd keep forgeting and come back often! It's the gift that keeps on giving! :D

Irish 05-26-2004 03:40 PM

PF---The Chinese resturant owners use cats for"pheasant under
glass"not birds!Did you ever see any cats by a Chinese resturant?
Steph---I was serious about that web search. As I said-The small
critters, were digging up my new pavement, where it meets the garage. My pavement company owner(long time friend & riding
buddy)looked at it & told me what it was.I bought a new "Hav-a hart"trap, because they didn't weigh enough,to trip my squirrel-
size one. That didn't work so my wife tried the Web! Irish
P.S.It's good to have a Lab with gas. That way,you can blame the dog, when you fart!:D

Steph 05-26-2004 04:10 PM

Irish, where do I begin? :D Our Lab love? They're disgusting creatures, surely you know that?

My brown Lab is outside after his THIRD big walk today. Nothing will satisfy him.

Steph 05-26-2004 04:11 PM

WI, I can't forget *THAT* much!!!

huntersgirl 05-26-2004 04:36 PM

I am laughing so hard I'm crying!!!!!

Good luck with the pigeons Steph, or at least finding some weed!!!!!:D :D

Irish 05-26-2004 07:37 PM

I had a Black Lab/Rotty combo,for 11 1/2 yrs.I still miss him!
Steph---If you can get some seeds, from your neighbors,I will send
you instructions,on how to Grow-your-own very easily! Irish
P.S.Birds, I know how to kill.Pot,I know how to grow!I'm a man,of
many talents!

cbass1976 05-26-2004 08:35 PM

wish i could help......have bird problems myself around my shop

SOULMINER 05-26-2004 11:30 PM

Ummm...I remember some odd old man that lived next to my
grandparents used to put rubber snakes on his roof and lawn...
I know that sounds kinda funny, but I swear to God, his house
was the only one without pigeons. And he was always one step
ahead of the neighbors decorating for Halloween :p

Belial 05-27-2004 01:03 AM

Use the Alka Seltzer and go out for a few hours :)

Hey, you won't have to see them explode! :p

Steph 05-27-2004 11:05 AM

LOL Irish and Belial!

I have grown my own but my apt. is pretty small now. I don't know where I'd put the lights. Plus, my landlord is pretty anal so he'd notice the increased hydro right away!

naughtyangel 05-27-2004 11:13 AM

lmbo @ belial

That's soooo mean!

Steph 05-28-2004 11:15 AM

I might just try that, SOULMINER!

OK, I was just eating a hot dog and fries downtown and when I still had half my fries left, the seagulls descended on my PLATE and ATTACKED MY FRIES!!!

I give up!

Eros 05-28-2004 11:42 AM

Ok..I"m up for a road trip and some time away from here...

Steph hon, you keep me in beer and pringles and I'll take care of the birds... :D

Steph 05-28-2004 11:49 AM

It's a fair trade, Eros! I hadn't even thought of what kind of bird might steal my ketchup Pringles! I'd have to arm myself if they tried to steal them.
