That was my guess. Rather than having to use batteries, it draws power from the USB port itself.

Yeah ... USB ports can put out about 500 milliamps, enough to drive small motors and such. That is for the internal USB ports on your 'puter.

If you get an external USB port, you can attach devices that require much more power since external USB ports are equipped with their own power supply.

Make sure you shop for a "powered" external USB port.
