CICADA that is! Peculiar and very noisy critter. This is their year...2004! Dunno what they are? Read a bit about them below. I've included a few pics of their deluge at my house as well.

They don't hurt you. I even let one walk on me. I was curious if it would bite...but it didn't even try. They molt and then sit for an hour or so...flickering their wings, to dry them I guess, and then fly away to the woods. There has to be millions of them in the woods at the edge of our property. At times, their mating sound is ear drum shattering!
Another pic of what they left behind at my house.....

Maybe they're looking for Pixies-Place. I understand all they want to do is fuck!

Very interesting...I have been reading up a little bit about cicadas...as I understand it they have been in the ground for 17 years this time, and this "infestation" is touted as being the worst ever!
Nature has a place for everything, but darned if I can figure what these are for! My understanding is that they stay in the ground til it is time for them to come out... they fly around, eat and breed and then 6 weeks later they die. Then in a decade, their "children" come out to play!

Mr. Lix was laughing at me one day. I saw one caught up in a spider web and I watched for a few minutes as it struggled to get out. I kept thinking to myself that it had just spent an hour or so struggling to get out of it's shell and now it's come to this end after waiting some 17 years to be free???!! I couldn't leave it in the web to struggle and die. I freed it and Mr. Lix said, "There are millions of them and only the strong survive...what the hell are you doing?" I shrugged, thinking...it'll probably get eaten by a bird before it gets to the woods, but at least I gave it one more chance to mate!
I eventually washed as many of the shells off the tree as I could. It just looked icky.....

Good for you lixy! I would have felt the same way. I'm surprised they are not extinct with all the chemicals we use on our lawns now. Someday they might be.

Take lots of pics Lixy. There will be kids in 16 years that won't believe you when you tell them what's coming. ;)

They don't have time to come to Pixies PF! They are having a fuck fest in the woods at the moment! Well...can't hear them so much today cause it's raining and on the chilly side and they don't seem to be so horny when the weather isn't clear and hot. Curious, huh?
They are really cool Chey! I love interacting with things that happen only rarely. I studied the one I had walking on me on an up close and personal basis. I was in awe of it's eyes. And...as close as I was to it, it may have been in awe of mine as well! LOL!
Another (less) rare thing will happen this Wednesday folks! Click below for a link to Star Gazer, with Jack Horkheimer...then scroll down the page to May 24, 2004 - May 30, 2004..."The Biggest Full Moon Of The Year Rides Across The Sky"...and click the RealPlayer vid to see the happenings that'll be going on!

And...the last of my cicada pics...they left no leaf bare, but left their shells everywhere!

LOL CGT! Hubby sprayed the lawn just yesterday, as a matter of fact. We have ants this year like they are going out of style! I made him wait though, till most of the cicada's had done their thing and flew off to the woods! He thinks I'm a kook too!
I do have lots of pics PF! I just edited a few for here. I wish I could get you all some audio on these bugs. It's infuckincredible!
OMG Lil! The shells are rather clingy things...ain't they? Yuck! I prefer the live bugs to touching the shells. I put my gardening gloves on and knock them off things when I find a laden spot. *shivers* Ewwwwwww!
***If you tried to click the StarGazer link before and didn't get anything...I think I fixed it now***

I've heard that Scarecrow! I think folks round these parts eat them like that! I'd have to be pretty hungry to give em a try...but hey...I'll try just about anything at least once!
*crunch*
BTW...do they filet them and take the wings off before they fry them? LOL!

I love em....the cicadas here are green...and sooooo cute...
I'm always rescuing them at work and end up with heaps of em clinging to my shirt *LOL* (my workmate hates em..."noisy bastards" she calls em.....and squashes em flat)
We get them every year....and yep very noisy...but not for long

LOL@IWM! I think I mighta missed my calling cause I have an extreme interest in science and nature...including bugs. I'm scared to death of wasps and hornets...but I love to wach them and all other living, creepy, crawly things. I got straight A's in science classes in high school and I'm a whiz at science and nature in a Trivial Pursuit game.
I really don't know what I would like to study and do about that interest for the rest of my life though. Dunno how to incorporate this interest into a money maker!!???

For those who've never seen this...and those who don't remember...here's some proof of my bug fetish...
This butterfly pic was last summer/fall...just before a tail end hurricane. She came and landed on my walk in front of me and let me lift her as she fluffed her wings to dry under the light. It was evening and it was wet and getting windy!

Cool butterfly pic! I'm definitely not a fan of the creepy crawlies either. I never knew so much about cicadas but I knew that something made an awful lot of noise in the spring, now I know!

Lovely butterfly and spider too.I am glad you let the spiders live free.I let them go around the house and love to watch them spin webs to catch the flies.Cicadas aren't from around here so I have never seen one.But if they are harmless, they deserve a place to. Wasps and hornets are a different story. The can attack in self defense and hurt and sometimes even kill.Have you ever seen their mud nests beneath the roofs? I hate to advocate the distruction of any species, but if they're a danger, spray a little WD40 near the entrance of the nests. This will oil their wings and bodies so they can't fly. Thanks for the pictures.....enjoyable.

I DON'T KILL NARY ANY LIVING THING!!!!
I say "nary" cause if a wolf spider is roaming inside my house and I can't catch it (ie: glass over it and paper shoved under the glass so I can pick it up and shake it off outside), I finally have to stomp it. Hey! Ever see a wolf spider? Yikes! Also, I do kill houseflies if they won't get out the door within 5 tries (that's my rule). Hornets, wasps and yellow jackets are all for Mr. Lixy to be a hero. I scream and scream till he yells, "Shut the fuck up so I can concentrate and get it...damn you!" Awwww...whatta hero! LMFAO! Other than that, I can't think of anything I would have a need to kill. I really just want to look at them and get an idea of their reason for being here!
Oh wait...*swat*...There is that pesky mosquito that has a knee-jerk reaction when it bites. Iffin they just didn't have to leave that saliva in us that makes us sick and/or itch! Geezzzz! Ain't the food chain fun?

Dear LixyChick,
I'm almost embarrased to say that whenever I check into one of your posts, I am so distracted by the beautiful avatar, I can barely read what you have written. I know this one is something about a tree or a bug, but all I can see is a most perfect breast in a most sensuous bra.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I love that STUFF!!!!!!!

We miss out on the 17 year cicadas here, but I understand they are hitting some surrounding counties...here we get the 13 year ones, they last hit us in '98...they're ugly & dumb as rocks, but they don't hurt anything (except maybe some very young & tender trees & bushes that the females lay their eggs in)...I've seen birds stuff themselves so full of cicadas they can't fly, & dogs think of 'em as "puppy popcorn"...
Oh, & Lixy...I've always thought the shells they leave behind are the coolest thing about 'em...I always wondered what they were as a kid, & at least that part doesn't make any noise...
When i refer to cicadas as dumb, it's because they fly mindlessly into everything & everybody...one of them got under the waistband of a lady I know, & she had to take her pants off in front of a whole crowd of people to get rid of the lil bastard...

I have to say *blech*!
I could deal with one or two of those things at once...but that many of pretty much anything grosses me out to no end. The fact that they only show up every so many years reminds me that we're about due for another army worm infestation *shudders*...they haven't been around for a few years. Nasty little critters take over and eat everything green in quick order!

Cicadas in Oz come out every year, so I don't know how long they're
underground before they emerge.
The shells, ground and mixed with solvent make an excellent lacquor for
mock antique furniture.
Lilith, bead lacquor?
